Morrissey Dead at 55

“Morrissey has battled with depression most of his life.”

Musician Steven Patrick Morrissey better known as Morrissey died early Friday morning in his home in Los Angeles California. He was 55. His body was discovered in the early morning hours by a friend who went to check on him after the singer did not arrive to a scheduled meeting and was not responding to phone calls. A suicide note was found at the scene but the contents have not been released to the public yet.


Los Angeles County Coroner released this statement. “The Sheriff’s Office Coroner suspects his death to be a suicide due to asphyxia. A final investigation must be performed before a cause of death is determined. A forensic examination is scheduled for later this week and subsequent toxicology tests will be made.”

In a statement released by older sister Jackie “Morrissey passed away this morning, He has battled with depression most of his life. It seems it got to be to much for him to handle. The world lost an amazing artist today.”

In the 1980’s Morrissey rose to prominence as the lead vocalist for rock band The Smiths . In the United Kingdom The Smiths were highly successful but disbanded in 1987. In 1988 Morrissey began a successful solo career with many UK top ten singles and his debut album Viva Hate entered the UK charts at number one.

In 2013 Morrissey was repeatedly hospitalized for a string health problems which resulted in many tours and concerts being canceled. Finally in 2014 it was revealed the he had been battling cancer which has included 4 surgeries to remove diseased tissue.

Johnny Marr, former Smiths guitarist said in a statement about the singers death: “I’m completely in shock right now. I knew his health was deteriorating but I never thought he would do something like this.”

The singer released an autobiography simply titled  “autobiography” in 2013.  The book entered the UK  book charts at number one with 35,000 copies sold. After the success of his autobiography Morrissey revealed he was working on his first novel and was planning on retiring from music business at the age 55 to focus on writing.
